Beating Retreat


In 1957, the Battalion was invited to play retreat on the esplanade. This was the first occasion that a non-military band was accorded the privilege. Beating retreat has become a regular feature of the annual programme.

The Battalion selects and invites Brigade Bands from across Scotland each year to perform a Beating Retreat ceremony at Edinburgh Castle.

Guard of Honour


In 1932, the Battalion provided its first Guard of Honour for the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

The Battalion has provided a Guard of Honour for the Lord High Commissioner on an annual basis since 1953.

Companies in the Battalion and Battalions in Scotland are invited each year to nominate young people to take part in the guard.

President's Badge


The President's Badge is awarded during S3, you will:
  • Complete a Christian faith development course
  • Have good attendance for one session
  • Be recommended by the company captain
  • Participate in a non-residential teamwork skills experience
and either : Route A
  • Complete at least 30 points from the discover programme, having gained three badges in the last 12 months;
  • Take part in an activity-based residential event within the BB
  • Complete 10 hours of practical service for the Brigade or church
or : Route B
  • Gain the Bronze DofE Award
  • Young Volunteer Award
  • Go Mad Award

Queen's Badge


The Queen's Badge is the highest award that may be gained by a member of The Boys' Brigade. It's a real opportunity; it aims to challenge and equip the individual, provide new opportunities and expand horizons while remaining accessible to young people of all abilities.

A young person wishing to work towards their Queen's Badge must first have completed their President's Badge. The Queen's Badge offers the chance to engage with the local community, take on responsibility, set personal goals, build self confidence and experience a sense of achievement.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award


The DofE is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities, designed to support the personal and social development of young people aged 14-25, regardless of gender, background or ability.

It offers an individual challenge and encourages young people to undertake exciting, constructive, challenging and enjoyable activities in their free time.

KGVI Youth Leadership Training


KGVI is for all those aged 17 to 21 years old that would like to move into leadership in The Boys' Brigade.

KGVI is a 2 week long residential experience with all that you need to become a leader in The Boys' Brigade. KGVI is held at Carronvale House.

All participants will cover the core and some additional modules of Youth Leader Training (basic training for all leaders in The Boys' Brigade).

Through this participants will have an opportunity to:  learn new skills, make new friends; get new ideas and inspiration; explore your own faith; grow in confidence; and share & widen experiences.

Young Leaders' Network


Young Leaders’ Network is for Seniors and Young Leaders (up to 25) in The Boys' Brigade in Scotland offering fun, adventure, fellowship and further development opportunities at local, national and international level.

YLNs run mostly at Battalion level, but there is also a series of national events each year. For the rest of this session, there are opportunities at Battalion, national and also international level. Take a look at the Facebook page, but also get in touch with the Battalion to see what's taking place.

Boys' Brigade International


European Fellowship comprises Christian youth organisations from across Europe. By uniting, serving and supporting them, the European Fellowship will assist its member organisations to accomplish their mission with young people in developing faith, serving their local community and playing a role model within society.                            www.europeanfellowship.org



Global Fellowship is an international umbrella organisation connecting Christian youth organisations in 68 countries around the world. Craggan Outdoor Centre

Craggan Outdoor Centre, owned and managed by the Battalion, was opened in 1975 and has been providing residential experiences for 40 years.

The Battalion has already run a Battalion Activity Weekend this year and is planning to run another one later in the year.

The Battalion also hopes to run a Junior Section Camp, Company Section & Seniors Camp next Session (2015/16).

Youth Leader Training, etc.

Youth Leader Training

Youth Leader Training is the core training for anyone who wishes to become an officer in The Boys' Brigade. It is also for any other leaders who wish to extend their skills and knowledge in working with children and young people but who may not wish to become officers.

Holiday Leadership Certificate

The Holiday Leadership Certificate is a requirement for all Officers leading a camp or holiday of any overnight stay. Holiday Leadership certificates last for a period of 5 years and can be renewed for periods of 5 years.

The Certificate is a requirement for those training or supervising expeditions.
